Memories from '80s. Spandau Ballet and Through the barricades

I remember I listened ”Through the barricades” every night, after dinner, before going to sleep.

I was 16, with my head full of beautiful dream....
Spandau Ballet in 80s

I closed myself in my room, on the bed in the dark, with my white and old walkman with big orange headphones
The tape was spoiled, because too many times I did “rewind and play”.

I still shudder, when I think back to the intro: the sound of the rain and of the thunders, those steps that, I don’t know why but I was sure he was Tony Hadley walking in the rain, stopped… and then that amazing music started.

Closed eyes, the music pulled me under that rain, with the guys.
I was only 16, and those nights for me were essential.

That intro, followed by the energy of “Cross the line”, was my lifeblood. And then, each following song.

I knew every note, every nuance, every moment of the succession of that songs. I tried to not miss any instrument’s “word” – for me Spandau’s instruments speak - any touch in Tony’s voice. Gary's guitar was a caress for my restless soul of sixteen. I tried to single out Martin’s bass and John’s drums, pure energy, while Steve’s sax took me away from that little room, and carry me so far away… I remember how much “How many lies” made me cry every time. “Through the barricades”, in each listen, was more exciting, in each listen I discovered something more….while “Fight for ourselves” and “Virgin” made me feel loads, explosive, regenerated…… I felt almost the world in my hand, when I listened those songs. My school diary was full of their songs lyrics, pics, dedications and thoughts….Spandau vs Duran, but we were only teenagers, and every reason was a good reason to be part of a group, to identify ourselves in someone or something.
Even today, this album remains in the middle of my life
There is always one escape....
Every time I listen to it, for 30 years, I can see the giant posters of Spandau Ballet I had in my room, in front of my bed, the last think I saw before sleep and the first when the clock rang and I got up to go to school

Even today, when I listen it, I can see that young girl with orange and old headphones in the dark of her room, with her ingenuous dream to marry Martin Kemp and to say to all Spandau boys how much they were important for her.

***************************************

Ricordo che ascoltavo "Through the barricades” ogni sera, dopo cena, prima di andare a dormire.

Avevo 16 anni, e quelle serate per me erano fondamentali.

How many lies" mi faceva piangere ogni volta.
